In Rust the world eats the memory, and map size drives that far more than player count does. A 3000-size map with a small group sits comfortably inside Starter's 8 GB. The standard 4000 to 4500 maps most servers run, with fifty or more players and the bases that come with them, want Pro's 12 GB. Big modded servers with a large map, entity-heavy compounds, and a full plugin list are what Elite's 16 GB and 300% CPU are for. Slots are unlimited on every plan, so size for the world you intend to generate.
A procedural map generates from the seed and size you set, so rolling a new seed each wipe gives your players a genuinely new island for no work at all. A custom map is a file you upload and keep, which is what most roleplay and build servers want because the layout is part of the identity. You can switch between the two between wipes.
Facepunch force-wipes on the first Thursday of every month when the update lands, and that date anchors everyone's calendar whether you like it or not. Weekly wipes suit high-loot PvP where the fun is the first night; biweekly is the common middle ground; monthly rewards the builders and roleplayers who want a base to last. The Auto Wiper runs whichever you pick on schedule, so it happens the same way every time, and a schedule your players can plan their week around is one of the cheapest ways to build a population that comes back.
You decide per schedule whether a wipe clears the map alone or the map and blueprints together. Map-only keeps everyone's learned blueprints, so returning players get going again quickly. A full blueprint wipe resets progression for everybody, which is fairer for newcomers and the reason most servers save it for force wipe.
Gather rates, team limits, decay, and loot multipliers do more to shape your player base than any advert will. Vanilla rates reward people with whole evenings to spend and punish anyone who cannot commit; 2x and 5x pull in players with an hour after work; 10x and above are for servers built on constant fighting rather than grinding. Team limits decide whether you get organised clans or solos and duos. Pick a lane and say so in the server name, because a mismatch between the name and the rates is the fastest way to lose people in their first ten minutes.
The panel's browser carries 1,700+ uMod plugins, which is more choice than it is help on day one. A practical starting set is admin and moderation tools, a teleport or home plugin, a shop or economy, and raid protection for offline players. RCON access is open too, so whatever admin tooling your staff already use keeps working.
